I have not, but always wanted to.

I hope you get the chance to do a Catherine Project class. I think it can be tricking finding the time, but I have learned so much. It depends on the teacher and the cohort, but that can be said of any learning situation. Thus far I have enjoyed every single one of my classes.

"Children Playing Before a Statue of Hercules" sounds really good. Look forward to hearing your thoughts on it!

I loved "Americanah" - hope you enjoy it too.

I recommend Babel as a sort of Harry Potter for adults, with a fanciful take on the art of translation. It's a fun ride by the author of Yellowface.

I hope yo get around to it soon. I read a pretty thorough review of it so I know what it’s basically about without any spoilers. I’ve always been very intrigued by translation as an art and a linguistic process.

It’s not a good summer for me, and I’m happy the Catherine Project is still going strong, but what a gift an intensive group study of Hill would be. Godspeed!

Thank you, Michael! Wish you could join us. It looks like a full class with 14 people! Have you done Catherine Project before?

I am reading The Catholic Writer Today and other essays by Dana Gioia. He has an essay about Gerard Manley Hopkins. I'm looking forward to the Summer Writers Institute in poetry at University of St. Thomas this June but I am such a neophyte! Although I got my MFA in 2022 from Lindenwood University it was not classical and I did Creative Writing without a concentration. Looking at all you are reading I am definitely way over my head! So much to learn but excited about it (not the flight though 😐). Sorry to say I 'll be missing Frost conference this year---have a family event that weekend.

Everything Dana Gioia writes and recommends is good! Never too late to learn. I am many years behind in my reading. I am just trying to catch up. Sorry I won’t see you at Frost but I am glad you will be at UST. If you get James Matthew Wilson tell him I said hi! I know you will learn a lot.

I read Liars Poker. Ok. Probably a better read when it was written. InThe Bedroom is a great movie if you want to feel remotely sad. I watched Mystic River a few hours ago on my flight. That was a great movie and tragic as well.

I can see how Liar’s Poker will probably feel dated. And I almost picked up Mystic River by Lehane because it was still on the table. I read some of his other work. Very Boston. Very noir. I decided to pass because I already had too many books! I saw In the Bedroom when it came out. Great movie, but yes, very sad. Same with House of Sand and Fog. Dubus crafts incredibly complex psychological dramas.

Lehane is one of my favorites.

I still think a lot about Shutter Island. And Gone Baby Gone, Mystic River… Lehane is classic.
