"The Savior must have been a docile Gentleman"

For Cassidy. Happy Birthday, Emily Dickinson!
6

This recording is dedicated to Cassidy, a long time virtual friend and subscriber. I am so happy to be able to post this one for you since it is on the birthday of one America’s most revered poets, Emily Dickinson, who was born on December 10, 1830.

“The Savior must have been a docile Gentleman” (1487) is less well known, perhaps for being so short—perhaps for not following the tune of Gilligan’s Island. But that being said, the beauty of this poem lies in the strong rhythm of the iambic meter, the short lines, and the wording and capitalization in the second stanza which give clues to the meaning of the poem.

The Savior must have been
A docile Gentleman—
To come so far so cold a Day
For little Fellowmen—

The Road to Bethlehem
Since He and I were Boys
Was leveled, but for that 'twould be
A rugged Billion Miles—

I hope this poem gives you some things to think about. Let me know in comments if you have any other thoughts.

Inspired by my post "Mixtapes Will Save Poetry" I will read a poem that I love for one (or a few) readers of The Beauty of Things, and I will describe why I find it so meaningful.
